ANDERSON,
Thomas Edwin
1944 - 2010
Thomas Edwin (Ted) Anderson died July 12, 2010 in an accident arising from a fierce windstorm which passed through his home property on Enterprise Creek, near Silverton B.C. Ted was working alongside a steep cliff when the storm blew a tree down, apparently striking and knocking him over the cliff to the canyon floor by the creek side, some 60 meters below. He was dead when Kaslo Search and Rescue workers reached him.
Ted is survived by his wife Suzanne Blewett, his daughter Jessica Wilson and grandchildren Abigail and Isabel of Red Deer; aunt Margaret (Anderson) Longmate (Les); brothers Bruce Anderson (Carol) of Lethbridge AB, and Keith Anderson (Phyllis) of Victoria BC; nieces Jennifer Anderson (Kyle Meyer), Jane Anderson (Ryan Cordes) and Heather Miller (Ron), nephew Brian Anderson (Julia), grandnieces and nephews Jessica and Nigel Anderson and Adam, Drew and Beth Miller, all of Calgary and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Weston (1976) and Evelyn (Bigelow-2004) Anderson of Red Deer.
Ted was born September 14, 1944 in Drumheller, Alberta. He grew up and spent his early years in Red Deer and nearby Sylvan Lake, where he utilized his interest in antiques and collectibles by operating an antique business before moving to BC. In the 1980s Ted bought the property on Enterprise Creek where he and Suzanne have lived for many years.
Ted lived his life with great enthusiasm. He had an inquiring mind and followed his constantly evolving interests, dreams and whims passionately. He enjoyed literature, art, music, the outdoors, collecting “things” and friends, and making deals. His self confidence and philosophical approach to life allowed him to engage and consider the opinions of others, but not necessarily have them sway his personal beliefs and direction.
Ted could live alone, but preferred the company of others, especially the loves of his life: Suzanne, daughter Jessica and grand-children Abigail and Isabel and his friends in the Slocan. Ted will be missed, but always remembered by those who knew and loved him.
A gathering of family and friends was held, following cremation, to celebrate Ted’s life.

GREGGAIN
Kenneth Donovan
1932-2010
April 19th 1932 in Alameda, Saskatchewan a little bundle of happiness was born to Tommy and Ruby Greggain named Kenneth Donovan to join 3 siblings and later one more. And so began Ken’s journey of life. His father Tommy was a grain buyer for Sask Wheat, his mother Ruby was a school teacher. Ken spent a very happy childhood enjoying all the possible things there were to do in the dirty thirties, run sheep run, kick the can, hockey, curling, baseball, chasing girls, a five cent movie on Saturdays, all this with his joined at the hip buddy Ray Brandon.
In 1951 Ken joined the RCMP in Regina. After training he was transferred to Edmonton on highway patrol, which he truly enjoyed. 1954, Ken was transferred to Plain Clothes Liquor Squad. Lots of great stories came from those years. Those were the days of moonshiners and bootleggers. He thoroughly enjoyed his RCMP days, but in 1956 he left to go to work for IAC. Ken met his fist wife Barbara Johnston in 1957, and they spent 17 years with IAC travelling to Saskatchewan and Manitoba. He was a member of Kiwanis and Lions Club in Prince Albert. Ken’s journey took him and his family to settle in Calgary.
He spent the next 17 years in finance at Jack Carters and other car dealerships. Barbara passed away in 1985. Their children: Jeff (Karen) Zach, Winnipeg, Pat, Calgary, Daughter-in-law Joan and sons Rory, Darian, Braden, and Colton Kimberly, BC, Cam(Sue) Kyle and Danielle, Calgary, Megan Greggain, New Glasgow, NS, and sister-in-law Marnie Franks, Calgary. The next part of Ken’s journey was meeting and marrying Eleanor Johnson of Red Deer. His comment was, “I wasn’t a grandpa when I married you and now I am a great grandpa.”
The next wonderful 24 years were spent at the farm south of Sylvan Lake. Retirement was not in Ken’s plans. He heard there was an opening at Lakewood Golf Course. So off he went to see Darcy. When he came home he said this job was made in heaven. So the next 17 years were spent doing what Ken loved most, meeting people and enjoying life. Another thing he loved was his sit on mower, every year the yard got bigger and bigger. There were many happy times spent at the farm. Family reunions, birthdays, and special events with friends were spent around the fire pit.
Also 5 weeks of winter were spent in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where they met so many beautiful friends- life was good. Then in 2008 Ken started to lose his power of speech, he was still able to use the pen and paper. Then his mobility started to go. In March 2009, Ken was diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia; soon the pen and paper were idle. The last of Ken`s journey was spent in Bentley Care Center where he was looked after by some incredibly special people; he was very happy there. Ken`s brilliant mind was trapped in an uncooperative body. And on St. Valentines Day 2010 he gave two thumbs up, had two puffs of oxygen and his journey came to an end. His wishes were for a private family wake at the fire pit in the early summer.
Left to cherish Ken`s memory are: his twin bother and sister Jim (Evelyn) Regina Saskatchewan, Lois (Bill- Ken`s dearest and best friend) Ambler, Regina, sister Betty Edwards, Mississauga Ontario, and brother Graham, Alameda Saskatchewan, also many loving nieces and nephews. And the love of his life he so often told her, Eleanor. He would say I wished I had known you when you were 19 her reply “you would have only been 17”. Step children: Linda (Daryl) Elson, Cluny AB, Valerie (deceased 1996) (Doug) Denman, Edson AB, Ray Johnson, Sylvan Lake, Nancy (Terry) Kumm, Red Deer, Robert (Linda) Johnson, Lacombe, Dixie (Tim) Partica, Sylvan Lake, Mark (Marylin) Johnson, Sylvan Lake, Shannon (Dana) Vanstone, Lacombe, brother-in-law Walter (Evelyn) Johnson, Calgary, sister-in-law Marion Johnson, Calgary, 31 grandchildren and 29 great-grand children. SHAW Hazel F.
HAZEL F. SHAW passed away peacefully on February 19, 2010 in Red Deer Hospital at the age of 93 years. Hazel was born at Outlook, Sk. on January 1, 1917 to Wesley and Margaret Dawe and was the middle child of 13 children, surviving all but one brother, Reuben, of Ajax, Ontario. She took her education at Lions Head School south of Wiseton, Sk., later moving to do housekeeping for families in the Eston, area. In 1936 she met Basil Shaw, marrying him in 1938 and settling to farm there.
Hazel was an active member of Full Gospel Church becoming a believer and being baptized at the same time as Basil. She willingly accepted students into our home during a time when housing was unavailable at the Bible School and was instrumental in starting the women’s missionary group who provided sewn items of clothing and quilts for missions overseas. One of her greatest joys was cooking and providing for others--if she knew of a need, she was there to assist. She was an active participant in the Plus 50 Centre. Following their retirement from farming, Hazel and Basil moved to Sylvan Lake, AB.
Surviving her passing is her husband of 71 years, Basil, daughter Carol (Byron), sons Delmer (Sandra) and Gerald (Faye), five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Hazel was pre-deceased by one great grandchild, Brett Blais.
Funeral services were held at Eston Full Gospel Church on Feb. 24 with Rev. Keith Powers officiating. Stan King read Psalm 23 and Psalm 46; the music was lead by Willard Mitchell, pianist Arlene Mitchell. Delmer gave the eulogy. The hymns sung were, ‘It Is Well With My Soul’ and ‘Beautiful Isle of Somewhere’. Pallbearers were nephews: Earl, Raymond and Stanley Dawe, Scott Ousdahl and grandsons Ryan Shaw and Cameron Shaw. The Honorary Pallbearers were all those in attendance. Hazel has been a blessing to many and will be sadly missed by all those who knew her.
