A Sylvan Lake area swimmer was one of four members leading the way with gold medal performances when the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club attended the 29th Edmonton Keyano Internationals at Kinsmen Sport Centre in Edmonton on the weekend.
Halle Loyek, 12, sped to the top of the podium in the 50 metre freestyle in 30.52 seconds, establishing her as one of the top young sprinters in the province, said Catalina head coach Sam Montgomery.
Other Sylvan Lake swimmers with the club were Jessie Bailey (11-12 girls category) who placed third in the 200 metre breaststroke and Brianna Bailey, 13, who placed seventh in both the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke events.
“It was exciting racing to open our long course swimming season for 50-metre pools,” said Montgomery. “Swimmers showed good early season form, particularly on the last night of the four day meet when fatigue was becoming a factor.”
The club’s 14 member contingent captured ‘small team’ category for women and placed eighth overall in a field of 20 teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the Yukon.
