The Sylvan Lake News published its first issue on October 31, 1935. The "News" currently serves the town of Sylvan Lake and the surrounding area ... east to the city of Red Deer boundary and west up to, and including Benalto. It goes as far south as Spruce View and as far north as Bentley (see coverage map under advertising information). Each Friday it publishes 7,350 copies and goes into EVERY home via Canada Post mail boxes. The Sylvan Lake News also publishes the Eckville Echo in the town of Eckville just west of Sylvan Lake.

Located in the heart of central Alberta, 18km west of Red Deer, exactly half way between Calgary and Edmonton, Sylvan Lake is a community of approximately 10,000 people. The economy is largely influenced by the town's largest attraction – the lake. The population swells enormously in the summer with an influx of vacationers, cottage owners and other visitors from around the world.

Statistics Canada lists Sylvan Lake as one of the two fastest growing towns in Canada.

Sylvan Lake is not just about summer though. The town and its businesses are enjoying increased year-round growth due to the attraction of small-town lifestyle options with the convenience of a larger centre minutes away.

Growth of regional businesses, an increasing number of seasonal residents, and its proximity to Red Deer region's job, recreation and shopping markets are benefits Sylvan Lake enjoys.
