The annual Smile Cookie Campaign will be returning to Sylvan Lake from April 29 to May 5.

For the 12th year, proceeds from the campaign will go to the Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care Committee (UCC).

Proceeds this year will go towards the purchase of a pulse oximeter, a piece of equipment that measures the saturation of oxygen in the blood, and further training costs for the doctors at the Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (AACS).

“The head doctors we have been in conversation with at the AACS want to make sure that everybody is comfortable with what they would suggest might be the worst-case scenario by upgrading the training of all of the doctors who work at the AACS,” UCC chair Susan Samson said.

Samson added if everything goes to plan, training will go ahead before spring is over.

The AACS is also trying to figure out a better way to advise the public of when they are closed due to unforeseen circumstances.

During the Smile Cookie Campaign on the backs of the cards being handed out will be a QR Code, Samson said.

“The code takes you to a site on which, if the AACS was closed that day, it would be in the top five or six results on that page.”

Samson said they have a good volunteer base for the campaign but are still looking to fill plenty of shifts.

Volunteers who sign up to participate can either do time in the drive-through or decorate cookies.

“Cookie decorating will primarily be done in the afternoon hours because we are not sure how many people we are going to get and we also know we will need people for the drive-through,” Samson said.

Some volunteer favourites from past years and new notable volunteers will also be participating this year including the fire department, the police, the Sylvan Lake Gulls, Acera Insurance, members of the Rotary Club, members of the Lions club, the Mayor and council members and local MP Blaine Calkins.

Individuals interested in volunteering can contact Samson at susamson56@gmail.com. or via messaging the UCC Facebook page.

Prior to the event, there is also the opportunity to order Smile Cookies in advance, Samson said.

“Forms are available at the Tim Hortons and can be dropped off there or a screenshot of the form can be taken and sent to sylvanlakesmilecookie@gmail.com.”
