The Town of Sylvan Lake will recognize March 26 as Purple Day for epilepsy awareness.
Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain where individuals who have it experience repeated seizures.
It is estimated that one in 100 people have epilepsy.
Recognizing Epilepsy Awareness Day (Purple Day) is important, Mayor Megan Hanson said.
“Recognizing it helps us become more aware of epilepsy, which is a condition that affects many residents in Sylvan Lake. When we acknowledge this day, we have the opportunity to learn about epilepsy and how we can support those who have it.”
In addition to learning about epilepsy and showing support through wearing purple, the Town will also light up the lighthouse purple in recognition of the day.
Purple Day was created in 2008 by Cassidy Megan in partnership with the Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes who was motivated to create it due to her struggles with epilepsy.
The day is recognized globally and aims to support those with epilepsy as well as provide education on and dispel myths surrounding the condition.
