A 27-year-old man is in custody after being identified as the person behind a Nov. 11 poppy box theft at the Stettler Tim Horton's.

Dustin Finlay was identified through surveillance and a warrant issued for his arrest. He was arrested in Red Deer on other matters on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Rosalind LaRose, the District 4 Commander with the Royal Canadian Legion, said poppy box thefts are rare.

"Each year we have one or two who break into the boxes," she said. "We don't usually see the boxes taken right from the establishment at which they've been placed.

The Stettler Legion brings in about $16,000 each year in poppy sales, money that is spent helping veterans, donated to the local hospital foundation, or long-term care initiatives.
