Driver killed in late night Hwy 11a accident

Sylvan Lake RCMP were on scene of a fatal accident Dec. 1.

At around 4:30 a.m. the Sylvan Lake RCMP were patrolling Highway 11a assisting Red Deer Detachment in looking for a vehicle that had been involved in serious incident in the city.

A member of the Sylvan Lake Detachment discovered a car drifting across the centre line without headlights while travelling westbound on Highway 11a.

The RCMP officer was able to avoid the collision and turn around to try and stop the vehicle.

The vehicle failed to stop before leaving the road and colliding with a power pole.

The driver of the vehicle was ejected from the vehicle and was located nearby deceased.

The passenger was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be freed from the vehicle by the Sylvan Lake Fire Department.

EMS was on scene and later transported the passenger to the Red Deer Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

Alcohol, speed and manner of driving are believed to be factors in the collision.

Police are not releasing the name of the deceased at this time.
