Mary Catherine Yvonne Moore

December 17, 1920 - May 31, 2017

The family of Mary Catherine Yvonne Moore sadly announces her passing on May 31, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 96 years. Mary was born in Innisfail, Alberta on December 17, 1920, daughter of Henry and Annie (Montgomery) Dolphin. She married Gordon Moore on July 15, 1943 in Sylvan Lake, Alberta and settled into farm life in the Centreville district, where they were actively involved in many community events, raising their family of two boys and two girls. Moving to Red Deer in 2008, Mary continued to be a lifetime member of the Centreville Women's Club.

Mary is survived by her eldest son Richard (Jeanette Davidson) of Sylvan Lake and youngest daughter Susan (Michael) Bentley of Calgary, as well as her son-in-law Jim (Bonnie) Dick of Sylvan Lake; grandchildren Kellie (Ryan) Crandall of Red Deer; Christopher Dick of Sylvan Lake; Jacki (Kevin Jimenez) Bentley of Calgary; and Jeremy Bentley of Kaitaia, New Zealand, as well as one precious great-grandchild, Grayson (Jacki). Mary is also survived by her younger sisters, Anne Switzer of Red Deer and Frances Cofell of Lethbridge, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she deeply cared for.

Mary is predeceased by her husband Gordon (June 1987), son Bradley (May 2003) and daughter Bonnie (January 2017), as well as her elder brother Bud Dolphin, younger sister Margaret (Dolphin) Savage and younger brother Hugh Dolphin.

Mary grew up on a farm near Raven, Alberta and in 1939, after completing high school, moved to Calgary to obtain her teaching certificate through the Calgary Normal School. In 1941 she secured her first teaching position at a one-room schoolhouse in New Hola, Alberta, and after a fulfilling career (taking a break to raise her family) retired in 1985 from the CP Blakely School in Sylvan Lake. Mary was passionate about making a difference in the lives of all her students, and in her later career focused on special education, leaving a lasting impression with many young minds.

In her younger years Mary enjoyed curling, and throughout her life leisure activities such as crossword puzzles, card games (crib) and pool. She loved poetry, both writing her own as well as collecting and scrapbooking her favorites. Mary loved to travel and wanted to instill the same within her family. A favorite memory of her children was their 1967 month-long excursion with the travel trailer across Canada to Montreal for Expo '67, and every year thereafter a summer family vacation somewhere new and exciting, until the children no longer lived at home. Mary and Gordon continued to travel far and wide, from the Panama Canal to the Mediterranean to Hong Kong, and after Gordon passed away, Mary carried on her travels with family and friends, visiting New Zealand at 80 years of age and most recently an Alaskan cruise at 87 years young.

To honour and celebrate Mary's life, a service will be held at 11:30 am on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 5020 48th Street, Sylvan Lake, Alberta, with a light luncheon to follow. Interment will take place at 3:00 pm at Alto Reste Cemetery in Red Deer, where Mary will be laid to rest beside her adored husband Gordon and their children Bonnie and Bradley. As an expression of sympathy, if friends and family so wish, a donation can be made in Mary's name to the charity of their choice.
