ECKVILLE CURLING - The Eckville Curling Club held their annual Open Bonspiel last week.

The Eckville Curling Club held their annual Open Bonspiel last weekend.

The bonspiel, which had less numbers then previous years, included many new and old teams to the Eckville Curling Club.

“It was a really good time,” Organizer Chris Quantz said. “The team numbers were down but it was still fun. We had 10 teams which meant it was more of a fun bonspiel. There was some teams that were experienced and others that were more learning to curl.”

This year was more difficult to bring in teams, however Quantz mentioned that bonspiel numbers don’t represent interest in the Eckville Curling Club.

“The numbers fluctuate every year depending on the weather and timing,” he said. “Everyone had a lot of fun.”

Since there were less teams, the Club decided to go with a points-based scoring system that awarded teams financially for winning.

“It was a points thing that led to teams getting their entry fee money back,” Quantz explained. “No team won all of their games to get all of their money back. It wasn’t a round-robin like an actual bonspiel.”

Quantz attributed the less numbers to timing.

“Our league numbers are okay but with bonspiels you either get a lucky weekend or you don’t,” he said. “Hopefully we will get a bunch of new curlers in our league next year which will bring in more to our bonspiels.”
