Learn more about recycling at show and shine

Recycling has become a way of life for Sylvan Lakers who participate, through the town’s waste transfer site, in tire, electronics and paint programs.

Saturday, during Sylvan Customs and Classics show and shine at Meadowlands Golf Club, Alberta Recycling will be promoting services it partners with the town to offer to Albertans.

“We’re inviting residents and participants to stop by, pick up some promotional items and find out what happens to your old computer, scrap tires, or that can of paint you dropped off for recycling,” stated a news release from the organization.

“Alberta’s tire, paint and electronics recycling programs play an important role in the day-to-day life of our town,” said John Watson, the town’s public works manager. “Not only do they help save valuable landfill space, the programs are a reminder that Albertans have a commitment to the environment that is second-to-none.”

Sylvan Lake transfer station, one mile east of town off Highway 11A, has been accepting end-of-life computers, printers, monitors, scrap tires, and leftover paint for recycling since the programs began.

The tire recycling program began in 1992, electronics in 2004 and paint in 2008. Through the programs, Albertans have recycled 85 million tires, six million computers and TVs, 13 million litres of paint and two million spray paint cans.
