Guest painter Michael Downs presented a workshop for Sylvan Lake Art Society members Oct. 21 at their regular meeting in the art room at École H. J. Cody High School.

Showing examples to illustrate his lessons, one of the things he talked about was conception versus perception and the battle between what you think and what you see. “Drawing is more like an intuitive process,” he said. The intuitive gesture is a good way to start the drawing process. The real key to doing well is to seek out relationships, build the underlying architecture.

An artist seeks out relationships, seeking large to small.” He added, for a good artist “subject doesn’t matter”.

Sixteen members attended the session. Sylvan Lake Art Society meets the second Monday each month from September to June.
