Need a liquor license for your holiday event? The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) launched a new online application process Nov. 29 and will be phasing out paper-issued licences over the next sixty days.

Albertans can use the online service to both apply and pay for a Special Event Licence for their private events with the new service. A private event is considered only open to members and invited guests and you cannot advertise the event publicly.

“We’re thrilled to announce that Albertans can now purchase Special Event Licences (SELs) for private events online,” stated Alain Maisonneuve, acting president & CEO of Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission, an official press release.

Until now, licences for private events could only be purchased at Alberta liquor retail locations.

There are two types of SELs, private non-sale and private resale. An example of a non-sale event would be a wedding with an open bar where guests are not paying for drinks or admission to the event. An example of a private resale event would be a Halloween party where guests pay for drinks and/or their admission. A private non-sale licence is $10 and a private resale licence is $25.

“The new online application is another way the AGLC is improving the delivery of services and products to Albertans. This is particularly exciting to us as we continue to modernize our business,” said Maisonneuve.
