Students from Ecole Steffie Woima Elementary School were treated to an unique opportunity to learn about cryogenics and liquid nitrogen, Nov. 14.
TELUS World of Science came to the school on Wednesday to present on cryogenics to all the students in the elementary school.
TELUS World of Science describes the presentation as an exploration of the effects of liquid nitrogen on matter. Students were able to discover how the substance and gases, liquids and solids react together.
The experiment involved students placing balloon animals into liquid nitrogen. The presenter would then remove the balloons, which had shrunk from exposure to the extreme cold, and place them into the hands of the students.
The students then watched as the balloons began to expand again as they breathed on them.
“The students loved this portion of the presentation and the hands on nature of helping with the experiment!” said Cherilyn Michaylow, administrative assistant at Steffie Woima.
Michaylow added the students and teacher all enjoyed the presentation “immensely.”
