A few people were feeling a little sore after spending about two hours cleaning up around the shoreline of Sylvan Lake over the weekend.

Team-up to Clean Up was held all around the lake on May 26 with the municipalities and counties around the lake pitching in to clean up around the lake.

This was the first time Team-up to Clean Up was held, and it is being considered a success.

Saturday morning volunteers from Sylvan Lake, the summer villages and Lacombe County worked simultaneously to clean sections of the lake.

Mayor Sean McIntyre said a lot of garbage was picked up from along the shore line and in the parks in Sylvan Lake, though there is no total amount of garbage picked up at this time.

There were roughly 60 volunteers who came out on May 26 in Sylvan Lake, in addition to members of staff and councillors.

“I want to thank everyone who took the time to come out and help,” said McIntyre.

“We all pitched in to clean up this beach, and it looks so much better.”

Having lots of volunteers not only in Sylvan Lake but across the lake as well, makes for light work, according to McIntyre.

The large amount of garbage found in the parks in the Town of Sylvan Lake was a little upsetting to those taking time out of their day, especially given the shoreline clean up event that took place in the fall.

Coun. Teresa Rilling noted at the recent meeting of council that once again a lot of cigarette buts were found in the parks, in particular around the pier.

Mayor McIntyre said in a video posted on his Facebook page that he is thankful to all those who helped on Saturday, and to those who are always mindful of the garbage they create and see that it is disposed of properly.
