Travelling Kindness board encourages random acts of kindness

The challenge is a collaboration between the Flipside Youth Center and Sylvan Lake Municipal Library

The Flipside Youth Centre and the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library have partnered up for a challenge called “Traveling Kindness.” Each month there will be a bulletin board travelling to a different spot in the community for people to find. Each month the board will feature a kindness challenge.

Children’s Program Coordinator for Flipside Youth Centre, Shelbe Shand, and Programmer for the Library, Corrie Brown, were looking for ways to collaborate and saw a common theme with kindness.

The library has already showcased kindness in several ways including hosting a kindness tree and a kindness jar (“take a kindness, leave a kindness”). Shand said the Flipside Youth Centre does “a lot around kindness” as well.

After brainstorming together, the two women came up with the idea of the travelling kindness board. This first month’s board is hidden somewhere in Sylvan Lake for anyone to find. The theme for this month is “random acts of kindness.”

Participants choose a random act of kindness from the board, complete the kindness, take a picture and post the act to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #travellingkindnesss to win a prize.

Each person who posts their picture with the hashtag will receive swag from the library or the youth centre.

“We’re getting quite a bit of buzz on our social media so far,” Shand said.

The creation of this month’s board was a Flipside Youth Centre group project. Shand asked each of the kids to come up with two random acts of kindness for the board. One of the boys got so excited about the project he came up with 14 ideas.

Hints on where to find the boards each month will be posted on the Flipside Youth Centre and the Sylvan Lake Library Facebook pages.
