Towering above her is one of the sunflowers in the front garden at Nancy Gagnon’s Wildrose Dr. home. It’s 12 feet tall and still growing, according to measurements taken Friday. “I get lovely comments every day,” she said. The leaves are so large, she said she’s got her own “little oasis behind them on the porch”. The stocks on the plants are “like tree trunks”.
The sunflowers, which face south, were grown from organic seeds she bought two years ago but she doesn’t give them any special attention — just rain water out of her barrel. She grew other tall sunflowers last year from the same package of seeds.
