Sponsors of this year’s Winter Village gathered for a sneak peak on Nov. 27 ahead of the official lighting this weekend.
The short peak at the new additions to the park seemed to be a hit, as all who gathered Tuesday evening marvelled at the sights, and sounds.
The Winter Village has been extended this year, with an additional 17 trees along the pier being lit up.
Denise Williams, executive director of the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce, said the process to put up all the light took a bit longer this year as the crews had to work around the weather.
“It took about four weeks, off and on [to put up all the light]. They had to work around the weather, so when it was nice out they would be out here putting up the lights,” Williams said.
Williams said they had a lot in store for this year’s Winter Village, but didn’t want to give too much away.
“We are so excited, there is going to be a lot of neat things going on here,” she said.

This year music has been added to go along with the lights. The light and music show goes off once every half an hour or so, with the lights “dancing” along with the music.
There are lots of little things to look for as well, like the placement of lights and the effects they create.
The Winter Village Committee is also hoping for some more snow this winter. They plan an creating some snow piles and slides for kids to play on.
Until then, there is always the Sylvan Lake sign to climb on.
Williams says to expect something to occur on the weekends, such as carollers and bonfires.
Over the course of December, there are four sponsored bonfires planned. The committee is hoping to see a sponsored bonfire every weekend throughout the winter, right up until March.
Doug McGill, chair of the Winter Village Committee, said the village could not happen without the help and support of the Town and sponsors.
“The whole reason behind this is to bring a little more life to Sylvan Lake in the winter months, and we couldn’t have done it without support,” McGill said.
The support form the Town and sponsorships have gone a long way to creating a unique and engaging light show on the pier.
With the lights stretching further down the pier this year, McGill says they won’t stop once the pier is completely lit up.
“Once the pier is lit up we plan to continue to move east and light up the whole park,” he said.
He also mentioned plans to put lights under the ice of the skating rink on the lake, but isn’t sure when that will occur exactly.
“Our goal is to have our lights seen in outer space,” McGill joked.
The count down to turn on the lights will take place after the fireworks on Dec. 1.
