Sylvan Lake’s recreation and culture department is stirring things up a bit this fall, chopping some of their staple youth cooking classes and mixing in some new skills for young chefs to learn.

Thanks to Lodge 43 and Chris Jervis, owner of Crucial Diesel in Sylvan Lake, students enrolled in H.J. Cody High School’s industrial education program will have new equipment to use and learn with.

Sylvan Lake will be celebrating the first Alberta Day, Sept. 3 with an afternoon of family fun at Lion’s Legacy Park.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, Veterans Voices of Canada will be hosting their annual Flags of Remembrance ceremony at Sylvan Lake’s Centennial Park, where 128 Canadian flags will be raised, representing the 128,000 Canadian military and RCMP members killed or missing in action, lost in service from the Boer War to present-day missions.

The Friends of the Sylvan Lake Library made their final donation on Friday, after a decade of making a difference.

School days bring congestion: yellow school buses are picking up their charges, kids on bikes are hurrying to get to school before the bell rings, hurried parents are trying to drop their kids off before work.

The Town of Sylvan Lake is being celebrated with a board game featuring many of its businesses.

The local chapter of 100 Women Who Care – Sylvan Lake & Area were very happy to make donations to two very worthy recipients this past month. There was a tie between two nominated non-profits after the initial member vote, and a second vote resulted in a tie as well, so the proceeds were split between two very deserving local organizations.

Over the last two years, Chris Sadleir, the founder of Walk To Breathe, has walked 840 kilometres to raise money and awareness for Alberta Lung. But this year, due to health concerns, Sadleir is hoping Albertans will step up, instead.

Volunteers and members of the Sylvan Lake economic development team will be visiting businesses in town as part of the Business Visitation Program.
