The Alberta Community Art Clubs Association (ACACA) Central Alberta Art Show is being held on May 10 and 11 at the Wellness and Community Connections Centre in Sylvan Lake.
The ACACA show gives artists in small communities an opportunity to do workshops, show their artwork, and really celebrates Alberta artists, Sylvan Lake Art Society President Karen Filthaut said.
"Every year, the ACACA has a Central, Southern, and Northern show. While you don't have to be part of a local society to join, you do need an ACACA membership to submit work."
Artists from a variety of locations will have art on display, including artists from Sylvan Lake, Rimbey, Red Deer, Lacombe, Rocky Mountain House, and more.
The art displayed is done in a variety of mediums and is available for people to view, purchase, and be judged by the jurors.
"Each show has three jurors who will critique the work and decide which pieces will go on. Winners will be selected from the student, beginner, intermediate, advanced, and master categories," Filthaut said.
After the show, the jurors also have the ability to move artists to a different category, she added.
"So if you participate yearly, you can really grow your art career and have something to work towards."
Each of the winning pieces' artists will be given a prize of around $150.
Apart from the juried winners, a people's choice award will also be given out.
"The people's choice award winner will also move on to further shows," Filthaut said.
The winning pieces will first go to the Alberta-wide show in Edmonton in August, and from there, the winners of that show will go on to the Spirit Show in September.
Holding the show in Sylvan Lake provides a way to promote local artists, and fits in with a goal of the art society, Filthaut said.
"A goal of the society is to build the arts and get art exposed, so the ACACA art show falls right into our goal of what our society is about."
During the show, half of the proceeds from the silent auction and registration fees will also go back to the art society, Filthaut added.
"We are also in the perfect location to hold this because there are many towns in the area that have art clubs."
For the event, hours run 1:30-9 p.m. on May 10 and 10 a.m to 2:30 p.m. on May 11.
Volunteers are also needed to set up, take down, and help with various tasks at the event.
