Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Sylvan Lake will be welcoming the community to come and see nativity sets at the church on Dec. 15.

This year is the third year the church has put on this event.

The main reason behind the event is to take people back to why the story of Christmas first began, event organizer Maureen Miller said.

"It is also meant to provide an alternative to the commercial experience of Christmas. The nativity provides a sign and symbol of peace we need to bring into our world right now."

Compared to last year, there are a couple of changes to the event.

"There will be two concerts for one hour each featuring musicians from the parish," Miller said.

The concerts will take place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with the musicians performing solo, as duets, and in groups.

This year there is also an option to give a free will offering to the new church building fund.

"People don't have to pay to come, but they can make a donation if they want to," Miller said.

At the event, there will also be two door prizes, an adult nativity set, and a children's nativity set that people can enter to win.

Miller said that each year the event has been put on, the number of Nativity sets has grown.

"Our first year, we had 30, and our second-year last year, we had 44, so I am hoping that we have that many or perhaps more this year."

The nativities available to view at the event include sets that are a wide range of sizes and are made from a wide variety of materials.

"There are a variety of sets. A Peanuts-themed set, a set made from natural materials, a Precious Moments-themed set, and sets from different countries," Miller said.

Telling the story behind each nativity set beside each set is a story card describing how the owner made, purchased, or acquired the set.

There is still time for people to submit their nativity set to be on display as well, she added.

"If someone in the Sylvan Lake or Central Alberta area owns a nativity set they would like to share they can contact me at 403-598-8064."

People interested in coming to the church to view the nativity sets are welcome to do so anytime from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 15.
