Construction on Centennial Street and 50 Ave. in Sylvan Lake will begin on Sept. 9.

The construction that will be taking place is phase two of the Centennial Street Redevelopment project.

"We hope to finish the majority of phase two this fall. Phase two finishing touches are scheduled for spring 2025," Town of Sylvan Lake staff said.

Once phase two of construction is complete a two-year break from downtown construction has been scheduled.

"This gives both residents and businesses a break to recover and plan before phase three begins," town staff said.

From September to October 2024, construction plans include:

- removing old asphalt, concrete curbs, and sidewalks

- installing underground wiring conduit for the new traffic signals

- excavating and installing a new gravel structure to provide a base for a new asphalt road surface

- building new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks

- paving the road with asphalt

- installing a new asphalt walking path on the east side of the intersection

- Landscaping

- CN Rail and Fortis are also working on upgrades

In November the traffic lights will be installed.

Timelines for the project are weather-dependent.

During phase two construction the 50 Ave. and Centennial Street intersection will be closed.

While the intersection will be closed all businesses will remain open during construction, town staff said.

"Pedestrians can access all businesses during construction. When new concrete is placed, please visit businesses using the rear access for 24 hours while the concrete dries."

"For businesses without rear doors, we will make every attempt to schedule work so that any business closures are kept to a minimum," they added.

During construction, some parking will remain open including the library parking lot south of 50 Ave. and the on-street parking north of 50 Ave.

More information on the project can be found on the engage Sylvan Lake website, engage.sylvanlake.ca.

Downtown businesses are also invited to attend a construction coffee meeting.

Meetings will take place on Sept. 18, Oct. 2, Oct. 16 and Oct. 30 at Lakeshore Cafe from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
