The Town of Sylvan Lake will be hosting the Diversity Awards on Friday, May 9.
The event, put on by Diversity Magazine, is a free event bringing people together from across the province to recognize those who best represent equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
In Sylvan Lake, diversity and inclusion aren't just words on paper, they are values, Mayor Megan Hanson said.
"When Diversity Magazine was looking for a community that truly walks the talk of welcoming people from all walks of life, Sylvan Lake stood out. We’ve been growing our efforts to create spaces and opportunities for everyone to thrive, and hosting the Diversity Awards is a recognition of that ongoing commitment."
"We’re honoured to partner with Diversity Magazine to celebrate the people and organizations making Alberta—and Sylvan Lake—more inclusive, compassionate, and vibrant."
The Diversity Awards celebrate everyday heroes who are building a better Alberta, she added.
"It’s like the Oscars—but instead of golden statues, we’re handing out gratitude, recognition, and a whole lot of community pride."
Hosting the Diversity Awards brings leaders, changemakers, and organizations from across Alberta to Sylvan Lake, Hanson said.
"It also shows our young people—and our entire community—that inclusion isn’t just something to talk about; it’s something to celebrate and build every single day. Plus, we’re extra proud this year because one of our own, Jensen Cavaliere, is nominated for her incredible work making swimming accessible to all kids."
"Hosting this event is about celebrating our progress, challenging ourselves to do even more, and showcasing Sylvan Lake as a community where everyone belongs."
The event will be taking place at the NexSource Centre, featuring a mini tour of Sylvan Lake starting at 4 p.m., networking and cultural exhibitions starting at 5 p.m., a panel discussion starting at 6 p.m., and the awards presentation starting at 7 p.m.
