The Town of Sylvan Lake will be conducting a drone survey on March 19 to get aerial imagery of Centennial Street.

Certified drone operators will be completing the work with equipment approved by Transport Canada.

The drones will be taking images on Centennial Street from the railway tracks to Lakeshore Drive and from 50 Ave. to 49 Ave.

Getting the imagery is important as it will help the Town develop streetscaping design concepts for the Centennial Street project, engineering services manager Eric Boudreau said.

“This will provide us with the most accurate representation of what the area looks like. As we work on creating what our ultimate design will look like, we can compare it to this information so we can accurately visualize how it will interact and work within the area.”

To get to the finished product of a design many steps are taken, he added.

“We collect information on what the existing area looks like, including imagery of existing infrastructure and a survey of the existing roadway, sidewalks, and landscaping. We also create a digital map of the environment which allows us to add, remove, and change features to best visualize how ideas will interact with each other.”

The drone survey will be taking place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and won’t cause any impact on people using either of the streets being photographed.

“Information from the drone survey will provide the Town with the best ability to communicate; creating a design that will function both practically and aesthetically, and provide the community with more accurate information and representation as to what the finished product could look like,” Boudreau said.
