Ecole H.J. Cody High School is hosting the Alberta Schools Athletic Association 3A senior girls basketball provincials.
Next week, the team will be playing in the zone playoffs.
While the host team automatically qualifies for provincials seeding is determined based on winning zones, Lakers coach Peter Saik said.
"Right now, we are ranked fifth, but once all teams are registered, we will get another look to see where we are in the tournament."
During provincials, games will be played at H.J. Cody and Ecole Fox Run School.
Saik said the event would be fun, and the team is a special group of young ladies.
"They are an unbelievable group to coach who give everything they have. They make you want to watch them."
In order to get the opportunity to host provincials the school needed the right group of people involved, Saik said.
"You need volunteers committed, athletes that can compete, and a group inside the school willing to step up and help. We had the correct mixture of people in the community, and in the building so when we did the application, the provincial selection committee liked everything we had."
Provincials will be taking place at H.J. Cody from March 20 to March 22.
"The community is excited and the community has been really supportive in coming forward with donations, gifts for the athletes and coaches, and more," Saik said.
"It is a really exciting time for our group because it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We are one of the stronger basketball programs that exists in the province so it is exciting to show it off."
