The Sylvan Lake Lion’s club had a successful showing for its annual golf tournament July 7.
The Meadowlands golf course saw a steady stream of people coming to play in order to support the Urgent Care Centre and the new Seniors Affordable Living Project.
The turnout is one of the largest ones the tournament has seen with 92 golfers coming to participate, Lion’s club member Klaas Vanveller said.
“It is great to see so many people come out to the event to participate. Seeing such a great turnout means to me that the event is becoming more popular and people are supportive of the projects we are supporting here.”
For the Urgent Care Centre donations from events like this are extremely important in order to help members of the community, tourists and people from the surrounding areas.
“Tourists and people from the communities around us come to use the Urgent Care Centre. Urgent Care is very important for them because if something happens to you while you are here or in the surrounding communities most of us don’t have any doctors so you need this service,” Urgent Care committee member and golf tournament volunteer Helen Posti said.
The new Seniors Affordable Living Project was also included as a recipient due to the need seen in the community.
“Some seniors can’t find anything in town to live in and have to move out of town in order to find a place to live,” VanVallen said.
“There have been many stories about some folks’ parents having to move because there isn’t really any affordable housing options nearby,” Lion’s Club Vice President Jonathan Whaley said.
The Lion’s Club is working on this new Seniors Living Project with the Town of Sylvan Lake where in the Council Meeting on June 26 council asked administration to look into more information regarding seniors housing in the community.
Information gathered by administration will help the Town better understand the specific situation in order to have further conversations with other levels of government about the needs of Sylvan Lake’s residents.
“We do regularly hear from residents that affordable housing is a concern for families and seniors,” Mayor Megan Hanson said.
”This issue falls under the authority of the provincial and federal government, so it is not something we have looked at municipally but as it is something we often talk about as a community concern we requested a report containing high-level information on what the landscape of affordable housing is in our community.”
The golf tournament was sponsored this year by Fire and Flood Emergency Services, Dr. Brian Inglis Professional Corp., Servus Credit Union, Strategis, the Town of Sylvan Lake, Roundabout Eatery, Re+Active Physiotherapy and Wellness, Benjamin Moore, RayAl Glass, Trilliant, Canadian Tire, Charger Pumping Solutions, Sobeys Sylvan Lake, Fence ‘N’ Things, Sunny Slesta, Sylvan Auto Centre, Sylvan Lake Veterinary Clinic, Rouillard Law Office and Sylvan Lake News.
The tournament also wouldn’t be possible without the help of the Meadowlands Golf Course, VanVeller said.
“Meadowlands has been great to us and have helped us with certain things that I am not sure if other golf courses would do.”
The total proceeds from the tournament will be allocated towards each of the benefiting organizations at the next Lion’s Club meeting.
During the tournament, four new people also signed up to be part of the Lion’s Club which is currently looking for new members.
