All outdoor rinks in Sylvan Lake are closing due to the warm weather conditions melting the ice.

Individuals need to be aware that when the weather is warm, and a layer of water on top of the ice surfaces is visible, it is not safe, communications officer Jared Waldo said.

“We need consistent cold temps to ensure we can maintain the integrity of the rinks, for everyone’s safety. That’s our top priority, always.”

The cold weather is especially important for the lake rinks, he added.

“We also need colder weather so that we can maintain the surfaces for people to properly enjoy them.”

Outdoor rinks that will be closed include:

  • West lake rink
  • Lakeshore Drive access gate
  • East lake rink
  • Lake parking lot just south of the lake rinks
  • Sylvan Lake Harrison Road rink
  • Ryders Leader Field East rink
  • Fieldstone Leader Field West rink
  • Beacon Hill Four Seasons/Community Centre rink
  • Reynolds Park rink

Beyond the lake rink area monitored for ice safety by the Town, users are responsible for ice safety.

“Residents should always use caution near bodies of water and use at their own risk. Safety should always be their top priority when near the lake,” Waldo said.

When the weather permits, the rinks in the community will reopen again.
