The Owen Hart Foundation (OHF) will be hosting its annual Food Drive on May 22 in support of the Sylvan Lake Food Bank.
The initiative was started by the OHF back in 2020 to help families during the pandemic to ensure they would not suffer due to food insecurity, director of the OHF Dr. Martha Hart told Sylvan Lake News.
“I had a vision that if all my Sylvan Lake neighbours and OHF committee members could leave a bag of food on their doorsteps and they could encourage their neighbors and friends to do the same, then perhaps I could collect it all and fill the shelves at the Sylvan Lake Food Bank for those families most in need. As I was trying to think of a creative way to hold a food drive without putting anybody at risk during the pandemic.”
The OHF also does a similar event in Calgary where the goal is to get 3000 pounds of groceries but since the food donated isn’t weighed at the Sylvan Lake food bank in Sylvan there is a different goal.
“I would say that if we could fill three vehicles which would be around 1500 puunds of groceries that would be a good goal.”
To date the OHF has collected many food items as well as funds in support of the Sylvan Lake Food Bank and without the members of the community it wouldn’t have been possible, Hart said.
“So many generous OHF supporters and Sylvan Lake residents have supported this initiative. It is amazing to see how one small act of kindness has sparked the annual OHF ‘May Long Weekend’ food drive, an event of giving back to the community that the Owen Hart Foundation is extremely proud to spearhead.”
People wishing to donate can drop off non-perishable food items and funds at the Marina Bay Clubhouse from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, May 22.
