A fashion show for students in Pre-Kindergarten was held at Ecole Our Lady of the Rosary School in Sylvan Lake on March, 14.

Twenty-four kids in the two Pre-K classes at the school taught by Lynne Tirpak and Lila Tighe participated in the morning show at 10 a.m.

This was the second year the school did the Pre-K fashion show, Tighe said.

“We like to have a celebration of earning at the end of every unit of study to showcase our learning.”

In the unit on studying fashion, children in the Pre-K classes learned about different kinds of clothes, fabrics, the processes involved in making and selling clothes, how clothes have changed over time, and more.

Studying clothing and fashion can provide a broad foundation for learning, Tighe said.

“This study shows how to use children’s interest in clothes to help them explore social studies and science concepts about different kinds of clothing and where and how clothing is made. The study also helps children use skills in literacy, math, technology, and the arts as they investigate.”

During the unit, students were also taught by Red Deer Catholic Indigenous Education Consultant Tracy Meneenin about Indigenous clothing.

“Students even had a chance to see and touch real fox fur,” Tighe said.

Some students also brought in different articles of clothing from their own specific culture.

“We learned about different types of clothing worn for the sacraments of baptism and marriage as well as different types of uniforms worn by community helpers,” Tighe said.

Apart from the fashion show, students also got to participate in a classroom clothing store, had a chance to tie-dye t-shirts, and learned to sew squares from Tirpak.
