A seismic event was reported to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) around 11:32 p.m. by Parallax Energy on Feb. 24.
The event occurred approximately 12 kilometres southwest of Red Deer, Alta, and is currently estimated to be 3.12 in magnitude.
A branch of the AER, the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), is reviewing the incident to determine the cause, media management specialist Renato Gandia said.
"There are no reports of damage or injury at this time. The AER requires companies to engage in mitigation protocols when events occur."
At the AGS scientists use more than 70 monitoring stations in order to measure and research seismic activity across Alberta, he added.
"The AGS uses this information to form an accurate picture of earthquake locations, and magnitudes and discern the nature of these events."
Residents in Sylvan Lake including Laurie Gathercole felt the effects of the earthquake.
"It was felt from Poplar Ridge down to south of Sylvan," Gathercole said in a post on Facebook.
