Sylvan Lake Buccaneers heading to provincials after league win

U17 Buccaneers heading to Provincials in Sylvan Lake
The U17 Sylvan LakeBuccaneers were their league champions. The team will be playing in the upcoming Provincials from July 12 to 14.

The U17 Sylvan Lake Buccaneers are Central Alberta Lacrosse League champions.

Having won gold in the league playoffs, the team has qualified for provincials, which are being hosted in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer from July 12-14.

For the players on the team, the playoff win was an exciting one.

"We were the underdogs and in fourth place going into playoffs, so to get the victory at the end, beating the team in the league that was undefeated was a core memory experience," Cole Marshall said.

For Ryan Gammie, returning to provincials means even more this year because they will be played at home.

"Last year we got second in all of Alberta, this year we are planning to make it to first in all of Alberta," Gammie said.

Just getting to Provincials is a big achievement, he added.

"It shows the work, the struggle, and the effort we put in to get to where we are now. It's a tremendous honour that demonstrates how much we have dedicated to this game."

This year the community has been a massive support for the team, both players said.

"The community supported us with the bottle/battery drive and more," Marshall said.

"The community provided significant help this year, securing sponsors who have brought about numerous beneficial changes," Gammie added.

During Provincials, the Buccaneers will be battling with five other teams to potentially win the provincial title.
