The Sylvan Lake Fire Department is urging residents to exercise extra caution due to the dry conditions increasing the risk of a fire.
Alberta Climate Information Services had deemed Sylvan Lake’s current fire danger risk as being very high currently.
Also, with the wind, warm temperatures, and no precipitation forecasted for next week, the dry conditions are likely to get worse.
Residents can do their part to reduce the risk of a fire by:
- never throw out cigarettes into materials that easily combust such as vegetation, potted plants, peat moss, dried grass mulch, leaves, or similar items
- place smoking materials in deep, sturdy ashtrays
- never toss smoking materials on the ground, in the garbage, or in a dry grassy area as they can smolder undetected for days prior to igniting a fire
- ensure fire pits are properly monitored and fully extinguished
At this time Sylvan Lake doesn’t have a fire ban in place.
Individuals can find out more about the fire ban status on the website, www.albertafirebans.ca.
