The Sylvan Lake Municipal Library will be hosting a special book talk featuring author Kristen Miller on Sept. 24.

Miller's book not only entertains but also sparks important conversations, head programmer Corrie Brown said.

"Miller's engaging storytelling and relatable characters make this book a must-read for anyone interested in the ongoing dialogue about freedom of expression and the value of diverse narratives in our communities."

The event will have community members come together to discuss the book themes, she added.

"Including the implications of book banning and the essential role of intellectual freedom, which is the right of individuals to access information and express ideas without censorship or restriction and encompasses the freedom to seek, receive, and share knowledge across various mediums, including literature, art, and digital platforms."

Event attendees will also be able to ask Miller questions as she is joining via Zoom, Brown said.

"They can share their thoughts and questions about the narrative and its real-world relevance."

Hosting a discussion about banned/banning books at the library is incredibly relevant, library director Haley Amendt said.

"Libraries are at the forefront of the fight for the freedom to read. This book talk is a chance for our community to participate in a healthy dialogue about access to information and diverse viewpoints. We encourage everyone to join us in this important conversation."

The event is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the library.

The book talk is open to people of all ages to participate.

"As the issue of book banning becomes increasingly prevalent, it is essential for communities to stand together in support of intellectual freedom. By engaging in discussions like this, residents can play an active role in ensuring that everyone has access to the stories and ideas that shape our world," Brown said.

More information about the event and how to register can be found on the library's website, prl.ab.ca/SylvanLake, or by contacting the library directly at 403-887-2130.
