Sylvan Lake resident Bonnie Ganske is raising money for former Sylvan Lake resident Cynthia Leigh’s cancer treatments.

When Cynthia lived in Sylvan Lake, she ran the Zoo Cruise, was part of the Rotary Club, and she was part of the Chamber of Commerce, Ganske said.

“Cynthia and her husband gave up their Sylvan Lake business when circumstances shut them down in 2014 and they moved to a little village near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.”

Now she is facing the fight of her life, Ganske said.

“In early December, she suddenly became ill, and she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.”

With the tumour too large to operate on Leigh sought help at a clinic in Tijuana called the Immunity Therapy Centre.

“As you can imagine, treatment is costly and bills are quickly mounting,” Ganske said.

Wanting to help, Ganske started the GoFundMe page.

Currently, $15,810 has been raised towards the goal of $20,000, Ganske said.

Another former friend of Leigh’s, David McCann, also had created a challenge for reaching the goal, Ganske added.

“If $20,000 is raised, McCann will match it.”

Recently, Ganske shared the GoFundMe page link on the Lake Nation Facebook page, and the response from the community has been strong.

“I do recognize many of the names of people who have donated as being people from Sylvan Lake,” Ganske said.

“Please recall all the good times spent with this lovely woman and help us bring Cynthia and her family through this crisis,” Ganske said.
