The weather was perfect on Sept. 15 for the 44th annual Terry Fox Run in Sylvan Lake.
Since the first run in Sylvan Lake 20 years ago, when Scott McDermott signed up to be the event director, including the $6, 410 raised Sunday community members have raised just over $70,000.
On Sept. 15 an enthusiastic 55 people came out to enjoy the sunny fall weather to walk, jog, ride, or stroll the two, five, and 10 km route along Lakeshore Drive and out to Jarvis Bay.
As well, Tim Hortons donated coffee, hot chocolate, Timbits and muffins for the eight volunteers and all the participants.
The crowd featured several cancer survivors wearing the red Terry Fox Run shirt in honour of their victory. Emotional stories were shared and wishes and prayers were added to the Dedication Board that features messages going back over 10 years.
Since Terry started his run across Canada in 1980, running 5,373 kilometres before his cancer returned and he had to stop, the Terry Fox Run has raised over $850 million.
With cancer drastically on the rise recently, the accredited research that is done by the Terry Fox Run through the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network as well as research grants, and more, is more important than ever.
Plans are already underway for the Terry Fox Run in 2025.
