Local athlete Noah Perez will compete in the upcoming World Lacrosse Men's U20 Championship in Seogwipo, Korea, on Team New Zealand.
Perez had to attend tryouts in New Zealand to earn a spot on the team.
"We were looked at by various coaches on different aspects of the game," said Perez, who is eligible to play for New Zealand because of his parents' citizenship.
For Perez, the Men's U20 Championship in Korea will be his first international event.
"I'm really looking forward to it. Representing New Zealand on an international stage is pretty special," he said.
"Lacrosse to me is a way to compete at a higher level athletically and test myself both physically and mentally, and playing at the international level is something every kid in sports dreams of and is an opportunity I am extremely grateful and excited for."
In Sylvan Lake, 17-year-old Perez plays for the Sylvan Lake Yetti Junior B Lacrosse Club.
"Sylvan Lake and Central Alberta have a strong development program for lacrosse players, growing the community along with all my coaches that have helped me get to a level where I'm competitive."
In the Men's U20 Championship, New Zealand is part of Pool C along with England, Jamaica, and Korea.
The Championship will start on August 15 and will run to August 24.
