Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are up and ready to go in the town of Sylvan Lake.

The driving force for bringing the charging stations to the community was a grant which paid for 100 per cent of the installation cost, director of recreation, culture, tourism and economic development Monique Pummings said.

“The grant, which covered 100 per cent of the costs of the EV chargers and installation which came to a total of $199,958.83 along with being able to offer the opportunity for residents and visitors to charge their electric vehicles was the driving force.”

The 11 charging stations are pay per use with revenue made going toward being able to pay for the electricity and upkeep of the stations.

So far comments to the town about the stations have been positive, Pummings said.

“We have received a few comments from residents who are pleased they have an opportunity to charge their vehicles around town.”

For the town it is exciting to be able to accept the grant from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre to bring this service to the community, Mayor Megan Hanson said.

“We are excited to bring this technology and support to Sylvan Lake. Our community is always looking for opportunities to engage with new partners in efforts to provide fresh innovation to our residents and visitors. This investment helps align with our goal in ensuring a greener future for Lakers of today, tomorrow and for future generations.”

Executive director of sustainability services for Alberta Municipalities Trina Innes is happy Sylvan Lake is embracing the addition of the EV stations.

“We are thrilled that the Town of Sylvan is ensuring their community members and visitors have access to charging stations in high-traffic areas. These stations will put Sylvan Lake on the electric vehicle charging map.”

The EV charging stations are located at Centennial Park, the Library parking lot, and the NexSource Centre.
