The Town of Sylvan Lake is rolling out a new initiative with council members giving out “Gratitude for a Great Attitude” tickets to local youth in the community they see making a positive impact.

The idea for the tickets came from a meeting where several other municipalities from the area attended, Mayor Megan Hanson said.

“During a round table, Mayor Cathy Heron from St. Albert spoke of this idea and how they were enjoying the opportunity to recognize the incredible youth in their community on an informal and regular basis.”

After the meeting, Hanson brought the idea forward to the communications team.

“I wanted to see if we could put a Sylvan Lake spin on it and do something similar here. All of council brainstormed to name the program and we are excited to be rolling it out.”

Each council member was provided with a handful of tickets to give out as they catch acts of kindness or greatness demonstrated by the youth.

“We anticipate each of us will distribute 5-10 tickets per month,” Hanson said.

The tickets will allow for youth to redeem them on drop-in activities at the NexSource Centre.

“The tickets can be used for any drop-in activity that is offered by the Town of Sylvan Lake. This can include swimming, skating, drop in sports night, walking track and many other activities.”

It is amazing to have this opportunity to celebrate acts of leadership in the communities youth.

“Sylvan Lake youth are already doing such a great job in so many areas. We often catch them being great citizens, picking up litter, helping out neighbors and being kind to others and we are excited to have a mechanism to appreciate these positive acts when we see them.”

The “Gratitude for a Great Attitude” initiative officially began during the 1913 Days weekend and will continue on an ongoing basis.
