Town of Sylvan Lake completes shoreline grading

The shoreline grading was done at the end of September

The Town of Sylvan Lake recently did some shoreline grading.

The Town of Sylvan Lake recently completed some grading on the beach.

To be able to do the grading the Town applied for a Temporary Field Authorization (TFA) from the Forestry and Parks department and a Water Act Approval for Shoreline Modification from Alberta Environment and Parks.

The recent work continued the shoreline grading completed on the west side in 2023, parks manager Brennan Cupples said.

"The grading project was initiated to eliminate the small islands and peninsulas of sand that had formed due to the lake’s receding water levels over the last few years. These small islands created pockets of stagnant water, resulting in algae blooms, and collected garbage and weeds, presenting challenges for our crews with shoreline maintenance, and an unpleasant user experience."

There is also a reason why the grading has been done now when it is at the end of the busy season, he added

"The restricted activity period for work within Sylvan Lake is October 1 to June 30 to protect fish populations during high-risk periods. With high visitor volumes in July and August, September is the most suitable time to complete the work."
