The Town of Sylvan Lake proclaimed the month of June as recreation and parks month during the council meeting on May 27.

Mayor Megan Hanson said the community is lucky to have fantastic recreation facilities and parks in Sylvan Lake.

"This is an opportunity to celebrate and highlight these great spaces."

The month of June is also the perfect timing to do that, she added.

"As it is the start of summer when park usage and outdoor activities are in full swing. This is an opportunity for us to promote the many benefits of recreation and parks, from enhancing physical health to building social connections and community pride."

The proclamation also highlights the broader impact of recreation and parks beyond individual health benefits, Hanson said.

"These facilities and programs play a significant role in reducing healthcare and social service costs, boosting the local economy, enhancing property values, decreasing vandalism and attracting new businesses."

There are many ways people can enjoy the parks and recreation spaces in the community, she added.

"Hosting events and activities at our parks, gathering with neighbours at a community garden or a playground, enjoying physical activity and showing our care for these spaces through picking up litter to ensure we continue to leave them in great shape."
