The Town of Sylvan Lake Volunteer Centre received a $600 grant from Volunteer Alberta.

The grant is provided yearly to organizations that apply and meet the criteria, Community Services Supervisor Val Munro said

The funds from the grant will be used to promote and market Volunteer Week, recognizing the many volunteers for their work and service to the community.

"We will be able to promote the Volunteer Centre as the place to go not only for providing our volunteers with opportunities, but also helping other agencies and Town departments by providing them with volunteers who are screened and vetted."

"In addition, our volunteers will receive something in appreciation for all of their tremendous contributions and hours of service throughout the year," Munro said.

Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to show how much the volunteers are appreciated for all of the work they provide to the community.

"Sylvan Lake is fortunate to have a strong volunteer base with many dedicated residents who want to donate their time to help make their community a better place to live. They are the 'hidden heroes' of our community; those who do the work simply because they care."

Volunteer Week will be taking place from April 27 to May 3.

During Volunteer Week, a Volunteer Information Night will take place at the Wellness and Community Connections Centre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30.

"The session will provide residents interested in volunteering with the opportunities organizations have available," Munro said.

As well, the Volunteer Centre Coordinator will also be there to provide each person with a form they can take to the RCMP for a free criminal record check.

"Once they pass a criminal check, residents can be placed into our database for when a volunteer opportunity arises. They will be emailed details so that they can choose what activities they would like to participate in with no pressure or obligation," Munro added.

More information on the Volunteer Centre can be found on the Town of Sylvan Lake website, sylvanlake.ca/en/public-services/volunteer-centre.aspx.
