Sewer line maintenance is underway in Sylvan Lake until June 30.
Sewer line maintenance is done to clear any material that could cause sewer backups or blockages and to make sure wastewater continues flowing to the Red Deer wastewater treatment plant.
Since sewer maintenance can cause toilet gurgling, the Town of Sylvan Lake is reminding residents to keep lids down.
On top of keeping the lids down to ensure any gurgles or splashes are kept inside the toilet, it is recommended to fill the p-traps with water to prevent any sewer smells.
The reason behind the gurgling is due to multiple things, including:
- The air being pushed out of the sewer main line into the sewer service line during the cleaning process can displace the water
- Inadequate venting of a home's plumbing system, possibly caused by the vent stack being plugged
