The Sylvan Lake Waste Transfer Station will no longer be burning tree branches.

The decision was made because of an uncontrolled fire that happened at the Transfer Station in July due to burning tree branches, operations manager John Watson said.

Instead of burning branches, future options being looked at include the possibility of mulching.

"There is limited room at the waste transfer site to support mulching but staff are reviewing options," Watson said.

Large loads of branches will also no longer be accepted at the Transfer Station.

"Most customers bring small loads of branches, so there won't be a significant impact to residents," Watson said.

"Commercial customers, such as tree removal contractors, are diverting their large volumes of trees or branches to the Red Deer Waste Management Facility where they are mulched."

People bringing branches to the Transfer Station should note some things, he added.

"Please cut your branches in small, manageable sizes and be prepared to unload them by hand. The facility cannot accommodate dump boxes or trailers."
