A week putting a spotlight on the young people in the community, Youth Week is taking place May 1 to May 7 in Sylvan Lake.
Youth Week is a great way for the community to celebrate youth achievements, creativity, and voices, Youth Services Supervisor Krista Carlson said.
"It also shows them that the community values them as young citizens."
For the week, the Town of Sylvan Lake reached out to local schools, businesses, and organizations to find out how they could get involved.
"The response was great," Carlson said.
During the week, many events are lined up, including:
- Pawsitivity Pups at Ecole Beacon Hill School (open only to EBHS students) on May 1-7
- Spring Splash Bash at the NexSource Centre from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., all ages welcome, drop-in fees apply on May 2
- Youth Spark Awards at the Wellness and Community Connections Centre from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event is invitation only and will take place on May 2
- Youth Movie Night, Rise of the Guardians at Landmark Cinemas from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 5. This event is free and is for youth aged 10 and up
- Prism Club '90s Karaoke Night at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 6. This event is free and is open to youth aged 13 to 18.
- Pizza with the Police at Ecole Fox Run School, this event is only open to EFRS students on May 6
Getting involved in Youth Week is a great way to empower youth to get involved in the community, celebrate their achievements, build connections between young people and their community, raise awareness about issues that impact young people, and give young people the chance to be inspired by others.
"This year's theme, 'YOUth Rock,' is a shoutout to how powerful and inspiring youth are. Be bold, be loud, be proud, because YOUth Rock," Carlson said.
