What started as a dismal game ended with the Sylvan Lake Gulls clawing their way back to victory, coming from behind to win 11-10 against the Energy City Cactus Rats.
The Sea of Gold Home Opener on May 29 had a rough start in more ways than one.
The game was delayed due to the weather, with the starting pitch moved to 7:30 p.m. after huge gusts of wind and rain took over the stadium.
When the game officially began, starting pitcher Josh Tucker took the mound and couldn't seem to find his control during the first inning, putting the Gulls far behind in what seemed to be an extremely sluggish start for the team.
After Tucker walked four players, he was removed during the inning and replaced by Dylan Myttenar. Tucker didn't get an out and allowed six runs.
The pitching wasn't the only thing that erred or showed that it still required work during the top of the first.
There were many sloppy throws, and the fielding at the beginning of the game looked very rigid.
However, as the game progressed further, the team managed to find their bats, which were lacking in the first few innings of the game.
The player of the game, Noah Konings, went three for five with an RBI, the tying run, which kept the Gulls alive during the bottom of the ninth.
Throughout the nine innings, the Gulls scored 11 runs, on 9 hits, and made one error charged to the second baseman Brooks Bachman during the top of the first.
The Sea of Gold Home Opener may have had a tough start, but the Gulls still came out triumphant in the end.
Coming up next for the Gulls, they will be playing three back-to-back away games against the Fort McMurray Giants on Friday, May 30, Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1.
The next game at Gulls Stadium, Healthcare Appreciation Night, takes place on June 3, where the Gulls will once again be facing off against the Cactus Rats.
