A lot has changed in the half-century since Parkland Veterinary Hospital first opened. Founded in Red Deer in 1974, the practice philosophy of supporting Central Alberta pets and their owners has not changed. The veterinary clinic has been owned and operated by Dr. Lana Keating for the past 18 years.
In 2016, Dr. Keating moved the veterinary clinic from Red Deer to the community of Sylvan Lake. "We've been expanding since then," says Dr. Keating, noting the clinic has grown from a single veterinarian to a team of three doctors supported by 21 staff members.
To celebrate the more than 50-year history, the community is invited to a June 5 open house showcasing the recent expansions and offering a behind-the-scenes look at the clinic's operations.
“Most people won't have seen the renovations because they're (done)behind the scenes,” Dr. Keating says. The open house includes face paintings, locally made cupcakes, clinic tours and interactive equipment displays, plus a barbecue, weather permitting.

And of course, no veterinary clinic celebration would be complete without puppies. Local rescue dogs currently in foster care will be there to meet the public.
Your full-service veterinary practice
Parkland Veterinary Hospital offers a full range of services, including general veterinary medicine and surgery, preventive wellness programs, therapeutic and surgical laser treatments, ultrasound, dental procedures and x-rays for small animals. Clients can also access nutritional counselling, extensive in-house lab diagnostics, behaviour consultations, and senior pet care.
Placing a strong emphasis on a compassionate, low-stress experience -including nervous pet accommodations - the Parkland Veterinary Hospital team can tailor veterinary visits for each animal.
“We're very proud to be part of this small town,” Dr. Keating says. “We've been really happy to work with rescues and with schools in this area – we're quite involved in the community and really happy to do so. Parkland Veterinary Hospital sponsors local athletes including the Blizzard soccer program, Sylvan Lake Wranglers hockey team, and Central Alberta Fire; a female football team.
What sets Parkland Veterinary Hospital apart, Dr. Keating adds, is the team’s dedication. “Everybody with their knowledge, their hard work - I’m proud of our staff in this facility,” she says. “We love what we do and we’re lucky to serve the pets and people of this community.”
