Assault charges laid following physical dispute in Sylvan Lake home

Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to the following calls between May 30 and June 5:

May 30

2:25 a.m. – RCMP received a 911 call to attend an address on 47th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. A small fire was reported after a can of shaving cream was set ablaze in the middle of the street. The Sylvan Lake Fire Department attended and quickly extinguished the fire without incident. There was no damage to any property in the vicinity.

1:14 p.m. – A complaint of mischief to mailboxes in Lacombe County was reported to police. RCMP were called to Range Road 22 at Township Road 400 after reports of damage to three large green mailboxes with several mailbox locks cut off. The incident remains under investigation.

10:55 p.m. – A large house party on Lakeview Crescent in Sylvan Lake resulted in RCMP attendance. A large group of youths was reported to be drinking at a residence. The party was shut down and parents were notified. One youth was arrested and received a fine under the Gaming and Liquor Act.

May 31

12:56 a.m. – RCMP attended an address on 45 Street Crescent in Sylvan Lake after a report of a domestic argument. Members attended and spoke to a cab driver who advised that he transported a female to Sylvan Lake from a bar in Red Deer where a verbal altercation had ensued with her boyfriend. Upon arriving at the residence, the dispute continued and the male kicked the cab before the driver left the area and contacted police. An investigation is continuing.

1:54 a.m. – Fire crews and RCMP were called to Steffie Woima Elementary School after a report of a dumpster fire at that location. A wooden garbage can was set ablaze and destroyed. Fortunately, there was no further damage as crews had quickly extinguished the fire. The cause remains under investigation.

6:10 a.m. – A call was received of a male lying on the ground near the train tracks on 50th Street at 50A Avenue in Sylvan Lake. Police attended and located the male who was heavily intoxicated. The male’s physical condition was checked and he was safely transported to his residence.

5:33 p.m. – RCMP attended Sylvan Storage on Township Road 392 to investigate a report of theft. The owner advised that two dirt bikes and a number of tools had been stolen after locks were cut on the back doors of an Easy Hauler trailer. An investigation continues.

9:25 p.m. – A disturbance on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake involving a group of people was reported to RCMP. Four females and three males, all from Edmonton, were located near the boardwalk and were arrested for fighting in public and public intoxication. All were transported to cells and lodged until sober. Violation tickets were also issued.

June 1

1:06 a.m. – Two youths are facing fines after a complaint was received of suspicious males in the vicinity of 44th Street in Sylvan Lake. Two males were observed driving along a back alley and stopping to check other vehicles. The suspect vehicle was located and a suspension was issued to the GDL driver. Violation tickets were issued for minors possessing and consuming alcohol as well as having alcohol within easy access in a vehicle. The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

9:55 a.m. – Vandalism to local businesses in Sylvan Lake was reported to police. The Barber Shop and the Whole Show Studio along 50th Street were targeted by graffiti. Anyone who has information on those responsible is being asked to contact Sylvan Lake RCMP.

8:26 p.m. – A male is facing charges in relation to a physical dispute at a residence in Sylvan Lake. RCMP were dispatched to 46th Avenue where the owner of a residence was taking possession and found a group of people inside the home. A 29-year-old male attempted to force a 55-year-old female out of the residence at which time a 33-year-old female and a 35-year-old male intervened. As a result, a 29-year-old male is facing two counts of assault.

10:47 p.m. – A traffic stop on Highway 11 near Eckville resulted in charges. A 48-year-old male from Eckville was stopped on his motorcycle for speeding and exhibited signs of intoxication. A roadside screening device was utilized. As a result, the male is charged with impaired driving; having a blood alcohol level over .08; and speeding.

June 4

3:14 a.m. – RCMP attended a dispute on Hinshaw Drive in Sylvan Lake. A 24-year-old male advised police that he had been assaulted by his intoxicated roommate. The male did not wish to provide a statement and did not wish to proceed with charges. A 26-year-old male was subsequently arrested for public intoxication and was lodged in cells until sober.
