Central Alberta couple spreads Christmas kindness

A Red Deer woman says the kindness of a stranger with a beard like Santa and his wonderful wife lifted her spirits during the holidays.

Wendy Muyser said on Dec. 28 the couple from Sylvan Lake delivered a walker after her brother in Edmonton found it on an online buy-and-sell platform and arranged for her to buy it for $50.

But before she had a chance to give the couple their money they told her it was their gift to her.

“All of a sudden she bent over and gave me a big hug and says Merry Christmas,” said Muyser who at first didn’t realize they wouldn’t take her money.

“I couldn’t believe it. I’m low income so it means a lot to me.”

She said the walker, that has a seat for her to sit and rest while she’s out and about, was exactly what she needed after tripping and falling and hurting her knee.

“It’s a wonderful walker. This couple really made my Christmas.”

Muyser said she moved to Red Deer from Edmonton at the beginning of November to be closer to her mother who was living at Bethany CollegeSide. Unfortunately, her mother died shortly before she made the move.

She injured her knee when she was moving into her Red Deer apartment and had been using a cane from her sister which didn’t provide much support.

She said then her plans to spend Christmas with her sister and her family in Edmonton were cancelled when her brother-in-law became sick with COVID, so it was a lousy Christmas.

But the couple with the walker made her holidays merry again. They also offered to bring her more health care equipment that they no longer needed. She just had to ask.

“It was just a tough year and they just made my year. They were just a beautiful, beautiful couple.”
