UPDATE 2: Collision at Highway 12 and 36 in Paintearth County

The highway has now reopened to traffic

First responders from Castor, Coronation and Stettler responded to a major motor vehicle collision scene at Highway 36 and Highway 12 intersection just outside of Castor in Paintearth County.

According to RCMP media relations, the collision was between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle towing a trailer.

The call came in at 10:19 a.m. and caused traffic to be diverted for several hours.

RCMP officers were on the scene for several more hours as they investigated what would be a fatal collision and emergency crews cleared the debris from the scene.

STARS was also called to the scene, arriving around 11:30 a.m.

In a final update, media relations identified the collision casualty as an 81-year-old resident of Barrie, Ont., who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Motorists were advised to stay away from the area if at all possible; RCMP media relations released an update that officers had cleared the scene and the road was reopened shortly before 4:30 p.m.

No further updates are expected.
