The newest physician in Sylvan Lake is Dr. Gareth Begley who has joined Sylvan Medical Center on 46th Street.
Trained in South Africa, he spent a lot of time working in the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Capetown, in his hometown of Kimberley, South Africa, and “a whole lot of different cities”, he said. He and his wife moved to Canada in 2005 where he started practicing in Drayton Valley.
Then when his wife, an architect, got a job in Red Deer they moved there where he’s worked for the past six years.
Begley is in general practice here and welcomes new patients. He’ll also be involved in obstetrics.
He and his wife have two boys, one four years old and the other 14 months old.
Asked about hobbies, Begley said he golfs and enjoys LPs on his old school sound system.
His musical tastes range to just about anything but he particularly enjoys rock and rock and classical.
“I’m enjoying Canada,” he said. “I’ve become quite a hockey fan, an Oiler at heart, and will hoot for the Flames if they’re playing any of the American teams. I haven’t really gotten into football yet, but at least the (San Francisco) 49ers are in the Super Bowl, that’s nice.”
