A young Eckville resident is looking to make a difference in the lives of animals.
Calyi Lawrence, 10, is raising funds and accepting donations in order to improve the lives of animals at Klassic Kennels, where she volunteers.
“I wanted to give stuff to the animals so they can have a better life,” Lawrence said, adding that she hopes that this will help the animals at Klassic Kennels get adopted.
Calyi routinely meets the animals at Klassic Kennels during her time as a volunteer.
“Her and my son both just took on volunteer positions at Klassic Kennels,” Calyi’s mom Tamara Lawrence said. “She wanted to raise money and supplies for them because they were short when we went there. She felt bad.”
Calyi decided that the best way to help these animals would be to set up a stand at the community garage sale, where she could have a central place to take in donations.
“When I held the community garage sale in town, she wanted to set up a table to collect donations of food, leashes, cat litter and blankets,” Tamara said. “She is going in at the end of April to deliver all the donations, and she also raised $252.”
According to Tamara, Calyi is “a crazy animal lover,” and the idea to help them out came from her time at the local library.
“She was the one who came up with the idea to volunteer,” Tamara said. “She read a book at the library and she got the idea to volunteer. We looked into it and found that Klassic Kennels is one of the ones that allow it.
“She goes in about once a month for three hours and cleans cat cages and plays with the animals. It is nice and she is falling in the footsteps, because I do it quite a bit as well. It is a little easier to have her come do it with me.”
She added, “it is good to see them thinking outside the box early.”
